The best winter getaway destinations for 2024 revealed

Winter is a great time of year to travel, offering travelers the chance to admire beautiful snowy landscapes or even ski and snowboard. But even if it doesn’t snow, there are still plenty of reasons to go on holiday in winter. It’s often an opportunity to get lower prices for your flight and hotel.

It can be hard to choose where you want to go, with so many potential holiday destinations, each with their own history, culture and landscapes to explore - so at DiscoverCars.com, we hope our fourth installment of our annual winter destination research helps narrow it down! In 2021, 2022 and 2023, we created a ranking of the top ten budget-friendly European cities for a winter break, and now we’ve returned with a ranking for 2024.

We looked at a range of factors including the average cost of a week-long hotel stay in each city, and ranked each destination out of 50 to create our top ten list.

Methodology

We analyzed several factors to narrow down the best European cities for a budget-friendly winter getaway. We considered data before scoring each city out of 50. The factors considered were:

  • Number of ‘cheap’ restaurants
  • Average car rental cost for one week
  • The average cost of a week-long hotel stay
  • Average flight cost (from London Heathrow)
  • Biggest attraction
  • Cost of the biggest attraction
We looked at 10 European capital cities, all renowned for being tourist hotspots in the winter months.
We collected the data on the premise that the reader would be going away for a week, and used the dates 20th November - 26th November for any data that required specific dates to be used.

We used Google Flights and recorded the top 10 round-trip prices from London Heathrow to the city's nearest airport, then created an average cost.
We used Expedia and recorded the prices of the top 15 recommended hotels in each city (not including advertisements) to create an average price.

We used DiscoverCars.com to find car rental prices and used this data to create an overall average.

We researched the most popular tourist attraction in the city, recording the price of a ticket for admission.

We used a popular travel review website to find the number of 'affordable' restaurants, attractions, and hotels, filtering by price.

Comparison

Looking at the annual results from 2021 until today, it’s interesting to note that this is the first time Prague has secured the top spot on the ranking, dethroning Krakow which has up until now been our number one affordable destination for a winter holiday.

The destination that dropped the most places in the ranking since last year is Paris - last year’s fourth best destination, this year it landed in seventh place.
The country that jumped the most places in the 2024 ranking is Berlin. Last year, the German capital ranked in seventh place, but this year it has moved up to claim the title of our third-best winter destination.

Some of the cities that charge for entry to their biggest attraction have seen price drops, while in others, the cost has increased. Visiting the Eiffel Tower has gone up from £21.52 last year to £29.42 in 2024. In contrast, Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace has dropped its ticket price from £40.53 to £31.93.

We hope that our 2024 report has helped give you an idea of where you might like to go on a winter holiday. As you can see, there are plenty of places where hotel accommodation and flights are cheaper than you might expect, and where the prices have dropped since last year. All of these cities are full of culture and history and would be a wonderful place to spend a week this winter.
