Airport travel guide
A port city known for its industrial and mercantile acumen, Burgas has also become one of Bulgaria’s most beloved travel destinations. There are nice enough beaches in the city, but an even more attractive coastline and other natural attractions are within easy reach if you explore the area with a car. Don’t be in too great a hurry to leave Burgas, though, as the city also has some cultural gems to explore. These are five of the most interesting attractions in and around it:
- Museums. Burgas has a good number of local museums and galleries that are definitely worth exploring! Perhaps the most interesting among them is the Archaeological Museum which has plenty of artifacts from the Ancient Greek and Roman days, and even from cultures that predate them. Other notable ones include the Natural History Museum, the Flora exhibition of unique plants, and the Ethnographic Museum dedicated to local folklore.
- Sea Garden. The Burgas Sea Garden, or Morska Gradina, is Burgas’ largest and most notable public park. As its name would suggest, it is located on the shore of the Black Sea. The park is home to a great variety of trees and plants, both local and exotic, and is also home to a number of beach bars and cafes, many of which are naturally especially busy during the summer months. The Sea Garden also hosts several annual events such as the Sand Sculpture Festival and its own Sea Garden Festival.
- Poda. A large and protected wetland area, Poda is one of the most interesting natural attractions in this part of the country. Located only about a 15-minute drive south of the city center of Burgas, it is known for its great diversity of wading and other types of birds that include Dalmatian pelicans, purple herons, and marsh harriers. You can ask for a pair of binoculars at Poda’s visitor’s center or even get a tour from an ornithologist. In addition to the nearby sea, Poda is also bordered by three large lakes, all of which are popular trip destinations. Other notable nature areas near Burgas include the Ropotamo Reserve which is about a 45-minute drive south just before the coastal town of Primorsko.
- Nesebar. Protected by UNESCO, the historic town of Nesebar is another popular day trip. Although predating the birth of Christianity by a good 500 years, it is best known for its many churches and monasteries — some are in a state of disrepair, others remain in good condition, but all have fascinating stories to tell. The drive from Burgas takes only about 35 minutes.
- Kamchia Biosphere Reserve. A former biosphere reserve that lost its protection status in 2017, Kamchia is something of a controversial place for locals due to the pollution and industrial activity it has recently experienced. Despite these issues and a lack of tourist infrastructure, its coastal forests and waterways remain a wild, fascinating place to explore. The former reserve (sometimes also written as Kamchiya on English language maps) is about a 90-minute drive north of Burgas.
