Airport travel guide
A place of contrasts, this large northwestern city is known for its economic output, entrepreneurial spirit, and modern architecture but also boasts a fully reconstructed old town and lots of historical monuments. Whichever side of Düsseldorf you decide to explore, you’re not going to be disappointed. Furthermore, the city is a great place for exploring the rest of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state. These are four of the city’s most interesting attractions:
- Old Town. Almost completely destroyed during the Second World War, the Altstadt of Düsseldorf has been rebuilt at a level of quality and detail that is simply fascinating. Many of the city’s most famous landmarks are located here, including St. Lambertus Basilica (its tower was restored to the same level of crookedness that it had before the war) and the Rathaus or city hall. A walk along the Rhine promenade, which is also located here, is one of the nicest experiences that Düsseldorf has to offer.
- Neuer Zollhof and Media Harbour. A unique complex of three leaning buildings, the New Zollhof is one of the most famous ensembles of contemporary architecture in Germany. If you decide to go and see them, make sure to also check out the neighboring 240 m (790 feet) tower of Rheinturm which has a 360-degree viewing platform near its top, as well as the rest of the redeveloped Media Harbor area.
- Benrath Palace. The palace was built between 1755 and 1770 under the direction of Carl Theodor and was designed by French architect Nicolas de Pigage in Rococo style. The palace itself is a three-winged building with a central main building and two symmetrical side wings. In addition to the palace, the grounds of Benrath are also worth exploring. The palace gardens were designed in the style of an English landscape garden, with winding paths, water features, and carefully landscaped vistas. The gardens also feature several sculptures, including a large bronze statue of Elector Carl Theodor on horseback.
- Brühl. A town that’s dwarfed in size by its much larger neighbors Düsseldorf and Cologne, Brühl is nonetheless one of the area’s most popular tourist attractions. Its main claim to fame is Augustusburg, a magnificent palace known for its exquisite interior and large gardens. However, that’s not the end of it, as Brühl is also home to the Max Ernst Museum, Phantasialand theme park, and Rhineland Nature Park. The drive from Düsseldorf takes one hour.
