Airport travel guide
A mecca of nightlife and beach parties, Cancun is one of the tourist trademarks of Mexico. But while the city itself undoubtedly has lots to offer, getting a rental car will give you access to a number of other interesting destinations of the Yucatan peninsula. With that in mind, these are four of the most fun day trips from Cancun:
- Chichen Itza. Located a good two-and-a-half-hour drive southwest of Cancun, Chichen Itza is nonetheless worth the long trip. The largest Mayan site in Mexico, this pre-Columbian city is best known for the impressive Pyramid of Kukulcan (also known simply as El Castillo) and its sculptures of feathered serpents, but the rest of the temples and sites are just as awe-inspiring.
- Cozumel. Another very popular tourist destination, the island of Cozumel is known for its beautiful coastline and as a hub of scuba diving and snorkeling, chiefly thanks to the reefs that surround it; the island is also home to the Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park and Arrecife Alacranes National Park (also called the Scorpion Reef). A drive south from Cancun takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes and includes a ferry, so ask your rental car provider in advance if they permit it.
- Sian Ka’an. One of the most beautiful nature areas in the region, Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is known both for its diversity of flora and fauna and for its ecologically conscious tours. Made up of a tropical jungle, mangrove forests, and even a barrier reef, the area is home to unique wildlife species like kinkajous, ocelots, and coatis. There are tours you can join, but it’s possible to also visit the reserve independently, although, depending on the areas you want to access, you might need a 4x4 vehicle. The drive from Cancun takes about three hours. A trip to Sian Ka’an can be combined with a visit to Cozumel or to the nearby Mayan site of Tulum.
- Playa del Carmen. Another popular coastal resort, Playa, as it is often referred to by locals, is a more relaxed alternative to Cancun’s wild energy. Although still very busy, especially during the high season, it has a notably more laid-back vibe and is also known for its great diving spots. The drive from the Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen takes about 90 minutes.

FAQ
Will I still be required to purchase insurance from the rental company when I arrive or will this be the final price?
Whether you will be required to purchase insurance at the rental desk depends both on which rental company you choose and in which country you reside.
Many rental companies do not include collision damage waivers (CDW) for customers from the United States and Canada. If your car insurance or credit card does not cover rental cars in Mexico, you will be required to purchase a CDW at the rental desk.
A CDW is almost always included for international customers. However, some companies (particularly MEX) do not include third-party liability insurance in the price and you will have to purchase it at the rental desk. Look at each offer carefully to make sure both a collision (or loss) damage waiver and thor-party liability insurance are included to avoid having to purchase them at the rental desk.

Dos ojos cenote was a bucket list experience. The rest of our trip was very disappointing. Isla Mujeres was sweltering, loud and people hound you to buy things constantly. Tulum is overpriced and difficult. Puerto Morelos was pretty nice though. But loud, all-day construction noise every place we went. Unfriendly “hosts”, elevated prices. Felt like a “cash cow” most places we went. I speak Spanish and there was no language barrier. The rental car was one of the best parts of the experience, all went well and it was great to have a car.

We landed in Cancun mid afternoon and initially planned driving to Holbox directly. But last minute we opted for staying a night at Avani Airport hotel which was the best decision ever. Roads to Chiquila are not good for driving at night. Should be avoided at all costs. Our route with Holbox first and then Chichen Itza followed by Merida and the Valladolid in route to Tulum was perfect. Wouldn’t have done it the other way round.
It’s important to be aware of time differences between Cancun/Holbox/Tulum and Valladolid/Merida

We arrived at airport and had someone waiting for us to bring us to the car rental place. We drove to Tulum and stayed at air bnb Central Park Lagunas. The place was located 15 m from both downtown Tulum and 15m from prestine beaches.
The street food in Tulum was amazing and the prices were incredibly cheap but if you plan to go to the beach side expect to pay a high premium just for a beach club or any food and drink. In my opinion the food prices in those places is very high and the alcoholic drinks are extremely high! Do not intend to order any drinks unless you want to throw your money away, 25$ for a drink is insane.
You can rent a beach lounge chair for 100$ US per person but again you don't get anything with that 100$ . Bring a Towel and a cooler for your drinks and food , you will not regret saving that money and be able to spend it on different excursions.
The shops near the beach are also very expensive , buy your souvenirs in the city instead, and always remember to negotiate for the best price. The AKI supermarket have everything you need with descent prices.
The streets in Tulum are save and the town is very pretty and full of events at night time. You will need to get use to driving there as they are very aggressive drivers and watch out for the speed bumps in various places on the road.
The ruins near Tulum are also highly recommended.
Playa del carmen is also a very nice place and the markets, restaurants etc on 5th street are packed and a nice place to walk and experience. Beaches are very nice as well.
I lived in Mexico for 3 years 15 years ago and it has changed a lot.
Go to new section in Puerto Morelos to experience Cenotes, we went to Mau Pau Cenote, It has a black banner with a face of a tiger on it, this is were you will enjoy a full day without the crowd, enjoy the aw of what the cenotes and its surroundings can offer and absorb that strong energy. The best 25$ you will ever spend. Ask for Hector and tell him his Canadian brother sends his regards!
Cancun was our favorite because the city has expanded and they have everything you need. Go to Mercado 28 and its surrounding if you want to get great deals on souvenirs or what ever your heart desires.
You will need a full day just to see all the different shops there and in the surrounding area.
Xcaret brand has some off the most amazing parks available for all your needs and worth the money. If you want to go to a beach a little further away I suggest Playa Blanca, that is considered to be the New Cancun, bring food and a cooler!
