One reason for renting a car when I visit is so that I'm not limited to only the cruise ship tourist areas. I enjoy doing the full loop of the island, taking a long, lazy day along the "wild" side (the east coast) of the island, where it isn't all developed, other than a couple of restaurants. Be sure to eat at Coconuts for the view, whimsical humor, the parrots, good food/drink, and perhaps be lucky to get one of their cool handmade palm frond grasshoppers that they'll make at your table. Spend most of a day at Punta Sur (Modest fee, and closed on Sundays) for lounging, snorkeling in calmer waters (can even swim all the way out to the reef, if you're a decent swimmer, not afraid of open water, are wearing long UV protection, and bring emergency floatation (inflatable snorkel vest, inflatable buoy, etc.). I've seen wild board and coati along with the bazillions of iguanas, and at the Punta Sur beach, you might get visits from resident raccoons trying to persuade you to part with some of your snacks. For a nice in-town evening meal, visit Casa Mission so that you'll be there when it turns dark. Be kind, tip the mariachis well, and be sure to order a "sexy coffee" for desert. :)
