Pros: Fast transport to and from airport

Cons: We had to sign a statement (I took a picture of it which I can mail if I get a mail address) in which you declare to be liable yourself. You have to pay a lot more to be fully insured according to them. (About € 500). In order not to take an irresponsible risk, we did it anyway. We have now paid 2x insurance costs. Can we still fix that?

Cons: EC rentals sold internet in the car for 10 dollar a day. It was very bad, didn’t work. And when we called they send us to a town 1 hour away for an office to change it, but the office was never open. When we dropped of the car, the employee of EC rentals called us a taxi which was his friend. Charged us $20 for 4km totally crazy. So didn’t get the car we paid for. Paid for internet that didn’t work and get screwed at the end. Would never recommend.

Pros: Car quality

Cons: Unaware of third part insurances. I had insurance from a 3rd party and he said it would not work. So we ended up paying for insurances. Tank was 7/8 full and ended up charging me 65$ Canadian. Wanted to charge me for sand on floor of car. Seems like I was unwittingly part of the milk the gringos program.

Pros: I used EC car rentals through discover cars.com. As noted below I had a very bad experience. Next time I’ll pay more and hopefully I will get a company with some integrity.

Cons: As noted by others this is a shady operation and I strongly advise against using them. I paid full coverage for insurance and added their bonus insurance that was supposed “to cover everything”. I brought the car in and discovered that there was a scratched bumper with some broken plastic. The EC employee said I’d “destroyed the car” and the insurance would not cover it. He refused to call the insurance company and said he would be charging my card $800 and that I would not get my $500 deposit.

Pros: Easy and fast checkin/out and communication

Cons: We asked the agent at checkin counter some questions about how to proceed in case of an accident or flat tire and the agent only focused on selling us an additional coverage (we had full protection via discover cars) and did not explain how to proceed if something happens. Luckily, nothing happened so we did not have to contact anybody.

Cons: They gave us the car without coolant then laughed and provoked us as we tried to explain why that was a serious problem on Costa Rican jungle roads. Because there was a dent on the bottom probably from us hitting a rock at some point, they refused to believe us about the coolant thinking it was some weird scheme to scam them. To have that be your gut instinct with customers already paying you a lot is blatantly horrific customer service. They exist to take advantage of tourists.

Pros: They helped us walk our bags to our nearby hotel since traffic was so bad.

Cons: The way they presented the extra insurance. It was just a communication issue, but it immediately caused me to be skeptical. We got through it though. We also had to insist on getting the 4-wheel drive we paid for as they wanted to put us in a 2-wheel drive.

Rate includes
Free cancellation with a full refund up to 48 hours before your pick-up time, Unlimited mileage, Additional driver, Collision Damage Waiver (deductible: ~€ 1145.00), Theft Protection, Third Party Liability (TPL), Airport surcharge, Free modifications, State Tax.
Driver requirements
Minimum rental age is 21 years.
A young driver fee applies to drivers under the age of 23.

Maximum rental age is 70 years.
A Senior driver fee is not applied.

The driver license must have been issued by authorized authorities at least 1 year(s) before the date of the commencement of the rental.

The driver license must be written in Latin alphabet.
Otherwise, the renter must provide an International Driver Permit (IDP).
A driver license printed using a non-Roman alphabet (Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic, etc) must be supplemented by an International Driving Permit.
Please note that the International Driving Permit is valid only if accompanied by the regular driver license.

In addition to documents mentioned previously, the customer will need the following: valid driver license, credit card on a main drivers name, Passport or ID card, booking voucher.
Deposit and deductible policy
A deposit will be blocked on the customer's credit card and will be released within 30 days after drop-off.
The exact deposit is determined on pick up since the amount is dependent on the type of vehicle.
Payment policy
At time of pick up, customers will be required to pay the amount of the rental and a deposit.
The following credit cards issued on the main driver's name are accepted: MasterCard, Visa, American Express.

Cash, Cheques, Debit cards, Prepaid cards is/are not accepted.

The main driver must provide a physical payment card in their name with enough funds to cover the deposit to pick up the car. The rental company will neither accept virtual credit cards (e.g., GooglePay or ApplePay) nor someone else’s card (including family members).
Optional extras and services
Available special equipment: Child seat (2-4 years of age).
Prices for extras are shown on the booking page.

Underage additional drivers are also subject to a young driver fee.
When picking up the vehicle, all drivers must be present and must provide valid documentation.

It is allowed to add up to 2 additional drivers.
Delivery/Collection service is available only by previous request.
Additional charges will be applied.
Fuel policy
The vehicle is provided with a full tank of fuel and must be returned with the same amount in order to avoid additional charges.
Additional information
The vehicle must be returned in an acceptably clean condition in order to avoid additional charges.
Business hours
Period of time, during regular working hours, when the car is still guaranteed for the customer, if the customer is late for pick up (the grace period) is 120 minutes.
