Pros: The size of the car was accurate to what DiscoverCars said we were going to get. The car was in good condition. I liked that the mileage was unlimited and the drop-off after we were serviced, was quick. The shuttle to the airport was also quick and appreciated. The agent at the Funchal office spoke good English so the communication was easy.

Cons: The offices should have more agents at the desk. When picking up the wait wasn't too bad because we were the only ones there, but when dropping off we had to wait for a couple to finish up their whole process before we got to ours

Pros: Staff was friendly at pickup. Just be aware that they will scrutinize the car for any possible damage. I ended up getting the extra insurance from them $20E per day so not cheap. I think that is where they make there money as the car rental price was very cheap through Discovery Cars but I don't thinknthe actual car rental company makes much on it so they do push the extra coverage hard. If you don't get it be sure to get very good pictures of car as they try and get you on anything they can

Pros: Nothing - all they were interest in was selling their insurance and when we didn’t take it out, they were looking for any reasons to make a claim for damage

Cons: Total rip off. €175 charged for the most minor of scratches to the lower rear plastic bumper that is on “wear & tear”. Only reason this was done was because we didn’t take out their own insurance. Never use this company again, Apauling customer service.. see photo of damaged bumper below. We now have to try and claim the €175 back from the insurance we took out.

Cons: Some consultants were rude, the car was not in good technical condition (we had problems with brake pads, the brakes did not work well) and we had to change a car the next day, therefore the plans for the day had to be changed. Some consultants were rude.

Cons: when I was booking the car, I checked specifically if debit card was accepted. When I arrived - it turned out that I can pay with debit card only if I take full insurance. It has to be more explicit at the point of booking. The team was very helpful and understanding and we found an amicable solution, but it does create additional stress for the customers.

Pros: Very friendly personnel that even offered to drive us to our accommodation after returning the car. Moreover, they can easily be contacted via Whatsapp with a quick response time. Picking up and dropping off the car was easy and quick, the car and documentation were ready.

Cons: They don't take prepaid visa cards to pay the deposit, meaning that it is obligated to take a quite expensive premium insurance (afterwards we were quite happy with the premium insurance though given the difficult roads).

Cons: No alternatives for the credit card. I had a credit card number with my name, a card with the name of my wife, a debit card to pay the rental fee... but the only alternative they gave me was to pay a daily insurance of more than 50% the price of the rental!

Cons: CDW was more expensive compared to booked fee, at return they promissed to bring us back downtown but they did not, the car was different then the booked one and had not enough horsepower for the hills in Madeira but the worst was they accussed us incorrectly from damage to the car that we did not do! We had the full CDW and they said we did nog need to pay for it, but they should not have said we did damage, that was not the case!

Rate includes
Free cancellation with a full refund up to 48 hours before your pick-up time, Unlimited mileage, Collision Damage Waiver (deductible: € 900.00), Theft Protection, Third Party Liability (TPL), Airport surcharge, Free modifications, State Tax.
Rate excludes
Many highways in Portugal are tolled using only electronic means.
All rental vehicles are equipped with a transponder that can be used for paying for all toll roads.
You’ll be charged a service fee of 1.85 EUR per day up to a maximum of 18.50 EUR per rental in addition to the tolls, which will be charged to your credit card after the rental period.
You may also be required to leave an additional deposit for tolls.
Driver requirements
Minimum rental age is 19 years.
A young driver fee applies to drivers under the age of 23.

There is no maximum age.
A senior driver fee applies to drivers over the age of 75.

The driver license must have been issued by authorized authorities at least 1 year(s) before the date of the commencement of the rental.

A driver license printed using a non-Roman alphabet (Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic, etc) must be supplemented by an International Driving Permit.
Driver licenses will be accepted if issued in the following country(ies): United Kingdom, EU countries.
Driver licenses from all other countries must be accompanied with International Driving Permit (IDP).
Please note that the International Driving Permit is valid only if accompanied by the regular driver license.

In order to pick up the car, the following documents are required: passport, valid driver license, credit card on a main drivers name, booking voucher.
Deposit and deductible policy
A deposit will be blocked on the customer's credit card and will be released within 30 days after drop-off.
The exact deposit is determined on pick up since the amount is dependent on the type of vehicle.
Optional extras and services
Available special equipment: Baby seat (up to 1 year of age), Child seat (2-4 years of age), Booster seat (4-10 years of age), First additional driver.
Prices for extras are shown on the booking page.

Adding additional drivers is allowed.
There is an additional charge for each driver.
Underage additional drivers are subject to both Young Driver and Additional Driver fees.
When picking up the vehicle, all drivers must be present and must provide valid documentation.

Certain additional drivers are subject to both an Additional Driver fee as well as either a Young Driver or Senior Driver fee.

Delivery/Collection service is available only by previous request.
Additional charges will be applied.
Fuel policy
The vehicle is provided with a full tank of fuel and must be returned with the same amount in order to avoid additional charges.
Additional information
Winter tires are not mandatory in Portugal.
Snow chains are recommended in icy/snowy conditions, especially when traveling in mountainous areas.
Rental period
The maximum rental period per agreement is 30 days.
If the renter would like to extend the rental period, renter should return to the car hire office at the end of the rental period to sign a new agreement.
Business hours
Service outside of business hours is available by request and for an additional charge.
Period of time, during regular working hours, when the car is still guaranteed for the customer, if the customer is late for pick up (the grace period) is 60 minutes.
