Goldcar
One of the best-known brands in the international car rental market, Goldcar was founded in 1985 in Alicante specifically targeting tourists. It would start doing business as Goldcar in 2006. In 2011, the company expanded outside of Spain to Portugal, specifically Faro Airport. Barcelona and Bilbao on mainland Spain and Ibiza and Minorca in the Balearic Islands would come next. It would later expand in Portugal with locations at Lisbon Airport and Porto Airport in addition to moving into Italy in Pisa and Bologna.
Goldcar would be acquired by one of its largest competitors, Europcar, in 2017. Europcar paid €550 million ($616 million) for the deal. The company continues to target budget leisure travelers as its primary clientele.
Goldcar has since expanded to many locations in Europe and beyond including popular tourist destinations like Cyprus, Greece, Croatia, and the Italian islands of Sardinia and Sicily. The company won our 2024 Excellent Car Rental Award in 8 locations including Lajes Terceira Airport in the Azores and Murcia International Airport.
