When I had issues with the brakes, you immediately swapped it for a different car. Even though I caused some damage, their staff—the team in Machico—were always very kind, helpful, and friendly. I enjoyed the entire experience.

Not having any type of dissatisfaction with Discovery Cars, I hereby come to speak out and express my total disgust with the Magic Islands employee (Alex) who attacked, mistreated and humiliated us.  Until the momen I have not yet received the refund of the deposit I made on December 15, 2023.

As I did not feel comfortable with automatic transmission, they exchanged the car for one with manual transmission next day. Their phone line worked and the employees spoke well English. The employees could be trusted. Their price was slightly lower than the one offered by competitors.

Cons: They do not have a rental office at the airport so you need to call them when you arrive. Also drop-off could be a bit longer, as they need to come to the airport.

They told us to sit and wait on a bench and they'd be with us shortly. An hour later we went to find them again. They said they'd forgotten us but could give us someone else's car. Young lads with a 'don't care' attitude. They took the full deposit (not just held) and we had to ring them 3 weeks later to get it back.

I just think maybe the instructions could be updated

Cons: We almost did not get the car, as they told us to wait for 20 minutes, than didn't show up. After an hour and a half of waiting on the spot they told us to be at, we stumbled upon them by chance on the parking, then had to wait for another hour or more to actually get the car, since they had problems with other costumers and had to solve them first. So overall, we waited for 3 hours to get the car, and the employees were very rude and not at all sorry for the inconveniece.

Pros: There is no dedicated desk like other providers like Gold Car, EuropCar so finding the agents is hard as they are not always present at the arrival terminal. However, once you get a hold of them it is pretty smooth.

Took forever for my turn in “line” - also unclear which customers were actually next since there was no real line. It even took longer to leave the parking lot because the card they gave me has expired and it took the guy another 10 minutes to pay the parking fee that would allow the car to leave.

Cons: The only issue is that since Magic Islands is a smaller operation, they are not located at the area with the other rental companies and to determine their location of the pick up / drop off was not easy despite this information being mentioned on our booking. Once found, great job, but have a sign or representative located in rental car area in the airport to guide customers to their location.

You absolutely have to take photos and videos of the car right at pick up, because if the guys at pickup don't mark the scratched and you have no photos/videos of the car from before you got it, they will make you pay for the damages. Take good photos, I would recommend from above and bellow each side of the car. Plus, we made a video as well.

Took over 2 hours for them to send a tow truck. Initially asked me to try and restart the battery which is ridiculous. Had to go all the way back to the airport to pick a new car wasting another 2 hours. Initially they wanted me to pay for the taxi to pick up the new car. Overall a bad experience, would not recommend at all.

Cons: Company is a scam. Their location on Google Maps is no where near the actual office, not even a 5 km radius. There are no signs at all around the airport to indicate where the office is and there are no pick up instructions on the rental voucher! Funny thing is, if you check Google Reviews you’ll find that countless people have the same experience. Never ever again am I using this website.

Cons: As stated, no car was provided and they were extremely unhelpful and dismissive when I phoned them the following day.

Pros: Expectation of quick and easy pick up was met.

Cons: Not all damage to bodywork were documented so at drop-off was a little struggle. Fortunately we had a foto randomly taken right after pick up so we had a proof that damage was already there. After showing the foto, drop-off staff was much more friendly I guess.

Cons: They have NO office at the airport. They based 20 minutes away. They said 90 minutes late is a No Show so terminated the hire, but retained my FULL payment.

Cons: 1.5 hours late dropping the vehicle off. Car had multiple damages on and the inspection was done in the dark. I was pointing damage out to the employee and he didn’t circle them all. On drop off they tried to say I had done damage to the car that was there when I collected it.

Cons: I could not locate them when we arrived. They said they would be there with a sign w/ name and they were not. I looked around for 45 mins finally found them. They said they didn’t even have us on their list. Finally figured it out. I tried emailing them a bunch and had my Airbnb host even call them to let them know our flight was delayed. They didn’t just put a hold on the card. They actually took the full $1500 deposit. They are not responsive they don’t answer on WhatsApp.

Pros: The car was new and good.

Cons: At the first rent I ask about the refund on CC, at the pickup & on drop off; it should be "immediate" after return the said. When I get the second car I haven't the refund done (3 business days later). So I had to choose, loose the rent and the payment or update to the full insurance without fund on CC. The charged 50 €/day for full cover, the cost of the rent was 40€/day; total 90 €/day for small car(as Fiat Panda). It wasn't write on the contract and it is UNFAIR, no mediation from both rents!

Pros: The car was clean and in good condition and super cheap to rent. I'm really recommending Magic Islands Rent A Car because my credit card didn't work and I was able to use the debit card for the deposit. The holding deposit was returned back to my account without any charges. The staff was amazing too.

Pros: I was using the new car, the mileage of the car when I picked up was only 650km.

Cons: The rental company charged (not blocked) a deposit of 1500 euros from my debit card, which I can understand because the car was new and rented for 11 days, but I returned the car without any damage on August 13 at 2PM and today is 2PM on August 17th and I still haven't received my deposit back - this is a strange form of business for this rental company, I don't know why they are using my money when we are no longer bound by any contract.

Cons: Both cars had small small damages and scratches on all places. Brakes (also the handbrake) is a challenge on Madeira and need good maintenance.

Cons: Very unprofessional staff that don’t do there job properly, when it comes to car damages they don’t reported all of them on the paperwork so on the return of the car they blame me for damages that was already there lucky I made a video but they still charge me on my deposit for damages and I had full insurance. I have sent them emails with no reply and made several phone calls where they are very rude and all they say is to send by emails, I really don’t know what else.

We had a problem with security deposit payment when picking the car and with baby seat stuck in place when dropping the car. Agents were patient and helped us with both issues. - Support by phone is reactive, polite and efficient.

Cons: I'd love to have an option to pay security deposit online. My stupid bank blocked a money transfer between my accounts because I was in Portugal; getting money to pay the deposit was quite a pain. Also I don't understand why I specifically need a credit card to pay the deposit.
