Mode Car Rentals at Queenstown Airport

Pros: 10/10 would recommend!! I recently had the pleasure of renting a van from Mode during my trip to Queenstown, and I couldn't be happier with the experience. From the moment we were shuttled from the airport to the rental desk, everything was seamless and easy. The staff were incredibly attentive on both pick up and drop off and provided us with all the useful information we needed, especially regarding safety and what to do in case of an accident.

Cons: The vehicle (toyoda hiace), which was advertised as a 10 pessenger van that could carry 4 large luggages, was actually much smaller vehicle and had limited luggage space as some of the seats had to be used to carry luggages. Incorrect insufficient info about the vehicle should be corrected.

Cons: We had booked and paid for a sat nav (would cost too much data to use phone). At first, they weren't too keen to provide one. Till we highlighted that we had paid for one.

Cons: The van would not start less than 24 hours later, we were told we had to call AAA, who told us the minimum charge to help us was $180. When the tech came out he showed us a lot of corrsion on the batery and said most likely it had leaked and re charged the battery ( waiting and charging took up over 2 hours of time on christmas eve ). Then when we spoke to Mode rentals they said they would NOT reimburse us because it was our fault because we left the cruise control on !!! FALSE

Pros: Check in was easy and the first driver who pick us from airport was very friendly and nice.

Cons: During the pick up, two staff inside the office were very rude to us. They told us that the bond ($3000) won’t be in your account for the next 10 days.

Pros: Thorough check out of the car, they insisted I take lots of photos of the marks already on the car, help given in how to drive an automatic, and really helpful when I had to go back and retrieve a bag which I'd left under the driver's seat. They should probably ask customers to check under the seat as a matter of course! They also gave me a lift to the bus terminal as I wasn't going straight to the airport.

Cons: It appeared I would need a physical credit card to pay the bond but in reality my debit card was fine. As I don't have a credit card that was a concern when I picked up the car and was relieved to find the debit card could be used after all.

Fortunately a MODE representative was walking in the car park and recognised the car and he was fantastic.

The interior was clean but the exterior was filthy. The inside of the front windscreen was soo bad that driving into the sun I was blinded by the water marks. I had to buy some glass cleaner and rags to clean it so I could see. The car had an incredibly annoying rattle behind the dash that drove us insane

Pros: When we arrived at Queenstown we rung the car rental company to let them know we had arrived as per what was on the documents we were given, they then picked us up from airport, the car was ready as we checked in online and when we returned car they dropped us back at airport. Cons: I had informed the rental company I was going to milford sound, obviously I would want to be comfortable during the drive, so I was looking for a solution to a problem with the drivers seat pushing hard against my spine, however upon getting back to the rental site I overheard the team complaining that my issue was basically ridiculous, I would say it is fair to ask to be comfortable during a trip? I was happy I could test another car but to be complained about - not nice.

Pros: I had never been to New Zealand and flew out hoping for the best as Mode rentals wasn’t a big name. The Yaris I rented drove me 1500km without issue! I slept in it, cooked in it, hung my clothes up to dry in it after getting soaked for days while backpacking. Mode exceeded expectations and I would rent from them again fooooor sure!

Pros: The agent at Mode rentals took some time going over the rental terms and other included services such as emergency roadside assistance, hence the slightly lower rating of “8” on time spent picking up the car. However, this thoroughness on the agent’s part was probably for the best considering the amount of driving we did.

Cons: Only issue is the car was very dirty. It had been vacuumed on the inside but the outside was covered in dirt & dust from previous trip. It was only when I mentioned it looked like it hadn’t been cleaned that one of the staff wiped it down. The inside of the car needed some attention with holes in the carpet (drivers side floor) and rips in centre console.

Pros: Nothing. They didn't even offer to put our bags in the car. I will say after leaving my reading glasses in the car and waiting over 45mins in the cold Craig got them to me as quick as was possible. We nearly missed our flight. I really feel like a refund from Mode rentals is in order.

The demanded $3000 deposit. Not once did they offer to put our bags in the bus or take them out. When I was checking the car for damage 3 of them stood in front of the car talking in their language, obviously about us.

Only once we were on the shuttle to the airport, Mode rep' in the van admitted he had the power to do so, though at the desk he said he cannot. Guess he avoided dealing with the extra paperwork (we go it "to fill & send later").A pity!

Cons: Just one comment about the car rented, it would need a brakes check done. The brakes were not very responsive.

Cons: Hated that they want a $3000.00 deposit for the car. We felt this was extremely high.

Cons: My credit card type wasn't accepted (American Express), though this is a major credit card. The car wing mirrors had cobwebs. The car itself was a bit dirty. No one was around when we came to return the car (he had gone to pick someone from the airport). Though I understand the understaffing for the last point as times are tough and perhaps having an extra staff member isn't economically possibly. However the other points are unsatisfactory.

Pros: Good value for money. Great car. No fuss at all at any point during the experience.

Pros: The drop off was very quick and easy and we were dropped at the airport within minutes of dropping the car off.

Cons: They charge a hefty bond despite having your credit card details which is meant to be refunded on drop off. I am still waiting for my bond to be refunded back into my card. It’ has now been 5 days.
