Payless
Payless is an American car rental company that is operated by Avalon Global Group out of its headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida. Avon Global Group is part of the Avis Budget Group, a holding company that owns the Avis and Budget brands, as its name would suggest, along with Payless and Zipcar. The group also owns many smaller brands in different regions of the world. Two notable ones that DiscoverCars.com partners with are Turisprime and Maggiore Group. The company focuses on the value-oriented segment of the rental market.
Payless was founded in 1971 by John Les Netterstron in Spokane, Washington as a single car rental office. The company then grew into a franchise with over 100 locations across the country. Later it would be acquired by a larger company. The logo was created in 1989 and was essentially the same as it is today.
As you may expect from the name, the Payless brand targets the value-oriented portion of the car rental market. It seeks to serve customers looking for quality rental vehicles at a lower price point. The company has an extensive fleet of vehicles, but in many locations has fewer types of vehicles to be able to offer lower prices. In many locations, it shares its fleet with its parent company Avis. Unlike some other lower-cost car rental companies, Payless doesn’t just seek to fulfill the needs of leisure travelers, but business travelers as well.
Payless now has about 120 locations around the world. These can be found in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Morocco, and various countries in Europe, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. The company’s locations in the US are mostly corporate-owned locations. Payless has locations serving many of the most popular airports in the country. Some of the locations in certain states in the US are franchisee locations. Almost all of the company’s international locations are franchisees.
In the US, Payless offers services for electronic tolling wherever toll roads exist. In some of these places, you can not pay tolls in cash. In others where you can pay with cash, being able to use the electronic tolling lanes is more convenient and will save you time. Payless, like most other rental companies, charges an additional daily fee for this service. You can make use of the electronic tolling service in the Northeast (from Maine to North Carolina), California, the Chicago Area, Colorado, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Washington, and Puerto Rico.
Payless offers a similar service in Canada to pay for cashless tolls (roads that don’t have physical toll booths that you can pay at with cash or card). Instead of like in the US, the fee for the toll service is a one-time charge per rental. With all of the toll services, you’ll be charged sometime after your rental for the toll charges you incur.
To conclude, it’s safe to say that if you want a good car rental deal while still going with a well-known brand, Payless is a great choice for you.
