Airport travel guide
Known not just for its typically Azorean volcanic landscape but also for some seriously impressive historical landmarks, Terceira is one of the best alternatives to the main island of the archipelago, São Miguel. These are three of its most interesting attractions:
- Angra do Heroísmo. One of the three co-capitals of the Azores, Angra is better known for having a fortress of great historical importance, a fact that has been recognized by UNESCO. Many of the medieval landmarks survive in a good condition to this day – it’s worth spending at least an hour strolling the fortress area with its wonderful ocean views. Angra do Heroísmo is on the south-central coast of the island and also has many of Terceira’s most popular accommodation options.
- Algar do Carvão. This is the biggest and arguably most impressive cave on the Azores, which was once formed by ancient magma flows. Starting from the fern- and moss-covered entrance it reaches a depth of 90 meters underground. The Algar do Carvão been made suitable for visitors with stone stairs and subtle lighting that keeps the natural look. It’s a spectacular site that’s a must-see on Terceira.
- Diving. In addition to many other water sports that can be practiced in the Azores, Terceira has a reputation as something of a diving and snorkeling mecca. Sites, instructors, and places to rent equipment can be found all across the island, but there’s an especially strong concentration of them around Praia da Vitória, a town on the northeastern coast that’s a lovely place to visit even if you’re not diving, as it also has one of the most accessible sand beaches of the island.

We visited Faial, Pico and Terceira during an 8 day trip - all beautiful islands and each special in its own way. The natural beauty of these islands is amazing, locals are so warm and friendly and food is great- glad we rented a car so we could explore everywhere at our own pace. Looking forward to going back to the Azores again.

Driving in the Azores is easy as speeds are low in the city and drivers are not aggressive. Major highways are outstanding, excellent condition, well signed and no traffic! Roundabouts have little traffic. Lots of free parking in Angra near the marina. In towns watch the blind corners as some drivers do cross the centre line.
