Yes, it definitely is. While the city itself is quite compact, the beauty of Funchal is that it can serve as a base for exploring the rest of the island. Getting around with public transport is possible, but takes a lot of planning and also limits you to the most populated parts of the island – while with your own car, you can practically see it all.
Where should I rent a car in Funchal?
The best place to rent a car in Madeira is the Funchal Airport. Situated some 13 km (8 miles) northeast of the city itself, and also known as Santa Catarina Airport and Cristiano Ronaldo Airport, it has offices of all the international and local rental businesses serving the island. The airport is usually also where you drop off the car at the end of your trip.
Is driving in Funchal difficult?
Not at all. Most of the roads serving the island are in good shape, and while you get the occasional nervous driver like anywhere else, the overall driving culture is rather relaxed and polite. Traveling across the island by car is also a great view to take in some beautiful scenery, especially if you’re driving on one of the coastal roads.

NYE fireworks were excellent, levada 25 fontes and pico de arieiro were really good walks. The food hall down from The Pub number 2 is excellent, as was Jagada 2 down from that. Poncha is fantastic and so is Bolo de caco

We drove on Madeira Island over two days, once we picked up the car we drove up and up and up to get to the 25 waterfalls hike. The hike wasn’t worth it in our opinion, I’m sure there are better ones. Then to Porto Moniz and Sexial Beach. There was lots of fog, but nothing to do about that. The waterfall by Sexial Beach was cool regardless of the lack of sun. The car we rented was a bit too weak for the hills in my opinion (was a bit nervous sometimes) but it was nice having a small car. VE4 is easily the best way to get across the island. I can recommend Cavacas natural pools closer to Funchal in place of Porto Moniz natural pools (smaller, but closer to Funchal). Pico Ruvio at dawn is SO worth it (wear a headlamp around your neck when hiking before sunrise) HIGHLY recommend “Madeira Top Sunrise” hike with Carlos (book via Viator). 150% worth the early start and the insane amount of steps.

Exploring Madeira by car is definitely the way to go. Beautiful drives on the winding roads in the mountain. The views are amazing and this is by far the best way to access all the beautiful hiking trails Madeira has to offer.

Madeira is an astonishingly beautiful island, offering a feast for the eyes, taste buds, and all other senses. It certainly merits a visit, and having a car allows you to explore the island on your schedule and your terms. Unfortunately, swimming in the midst of winter is not an option, but then again - there are tourist crowds and most tourist sites are yours to explore in relative piece and quiet.
