  • Ponta de São Lourenço. This nature reserve is where unique plants like the Ice Plant and the Cardoon have found their home. Those who dare to climb the steep mountain paths and the volcanic rocks will be rewarded with impressive ocean views.
  • Ribeiro Frio Natural Park. Another nature reserve, Ribeiro Frio can be best explored by walking its levadas or nature paths. The only human activity here is the trout farm that you can visit.
  • Porto Santo. The ferry to Porto Santo Island takes about two hours from Madeira Island, but is well worth the trip. The cozy Vila Baleira is the only human settlement on the island, so there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the island’s wild beaches and private atmosphere.
  • The São Vicente Caves. These caves were formed by the eruption of a volcanic vent, which caused the surrounding rock to melt and form lava tubes. Over time, the lava tubes cooled and solidified, creating the caves that we see today. They were first explored by a team of geologists in the early 20th century and are a popular Madeira day trip today (there is also a museum there).

Everywhere we went on the island was beautiful and the people were friendly. I wish we could teach the people in my home country to drive like they do here. On a personal fitness level, some of the terrain was medium to difficult depending one which trials/ hikes you went on. Good boots not shoes or flip flops is a must, as well as being properly hydrated, stopped to help out a few people who were suffering heat stroke/ dehydration because of that fact.

We were hiking for 7/10 days and the car was perfect for the steep roads of madeira. It also offered a lot of space to leave some extra clothes in the car since you never know about the weather here untill you reach your destination.

Unfortunately costings in Madeira are on the rise. Streets are getting increasingly busy. On street parking which used to be free or very low cost is now beginning to increase in price and areas. Attitude towards U.K. citizens queueing at airport is becoming very impolite due to the U.K. not being in the EU, with EU citizens more or less walking straight through. It should be remembered how many holidaymakers come from U.K. RESPECT!! All commercial enterprises ( car hirers, restaurants, hotels, etc. ) with the exception of political authorities recognise their need for tourism, UK and others.

We put on almost 700 km in the five days we were in Madeira covering all areas of the island. From beaches to forest walks, sunrise at the top of Pico do Arieiro, friendly towns and villages, and the many viewpoints in between.

Mountain Road and Motorway Driving of this almost spotless mid range car at Very Much Cost Effective hire charge from very genial and friendly staff who made no fuss about instilling confidence in them and their company. Even a deferred collect day due to Flight postponed didn't incur any extra charge nor challenge by efficient and prompt/instant resolution of adjustment to the transition of their vehicle flow. Madeira is simply wonderful! The only problem with Madeira is the streets and incredibly narrow and steep, so while a smaller car can fit anywhere, it will not be able to go up hill very effectively. We had quite a large car - Nissan Qashqai, so the narrow streets were a big problem, but luckily nothing happened. But there were no problems going up hill, like our friends who had a smaller car.

We liked Camara de Los Lobo's and drove there a few times for some fantastic food and beer. We explored the north west and Sao Vicente. Funchal provided us with some very nice "tourist" surprises.... Great restaurants with very cheap food and lovely food too. Madeira was nice but ‘personally’ it just wasn’t for us. We are a young 36 year old couple and the island is more for people from 50+ I would say. No night life, no nice beaches. Very very hilly and having a car is highly recommended unless you are happy to be stuck at your hotel. If you don’t have a car, then I recommend you stay in the centre of Funchal. Again, lovely island but just not for us.

Madeira is beautiful. Water in the ocean is warmer than I thought. Funchal is a big city and offers a lot of attractions. Pico Ruivo offers great views, and the way up is quite easy. Santana is a lovely small city. Santa Cruz is calm and good for rest, it also gives possibility to watch landing planes from a close distance. The black beach in Seixal with small waterfalls is really like from a paradise.

Main roads are fine - basically dual carriageways, however back roads tend to be steep, narrow and bendy. Be sure to be comfortable with hill starts if considering driving in Madeira. Make sure to take out full insurance, even though we didn't have to use it, I can see how easy it may be to have a small scrape or bump. I would recommend hiring a car in order to explore the island as gives you great independence.

In Madeira you want a car. You want it to be a small car, too, streets can be very narrow. We had a Fiat Punto and it was sufficient, but as it's a rather mountaineous region, you might want to consider a car with a little bit more horse power - but even a Fiat punto can climb any hill there is, just might need the first gear every now and then. Scratches and damages on cars seem a common thing, even though drivers on Madeira are actually good and friendly.

Who needs to spend more than a couple of days in Madeira I would recommend to rent a car to visit the island landmarks. It is a terrific place, very well adopted for tourists. Visited several places; including Camera de Lobos, Porto Muniz, Ponta do Sol, Calheta, Sao Vicente, Ribeira Brava, Santana, Machico, Santa Cruz and Funchal. All these have their own aura and if you are planning to visit Madeira, you must go site seeing all the above. There is fine dining everywhere you go. The food is great and inexpensive. If you are a wine lover, you couldn't be at a better place. Every glass of wine I tasted was great. I wanted to experience the local life, so I never asked to see a wine list. I just asked for a glass of the house wine, red or white it met my expectations. Here in the U.S, a glass of wine will cost you between $6 to $8. In Madeira it will cost you between two to three Euros. With a little planning you don't need to rent a car the entire time you there. Rent a car to go site seeing and once you are done with it, assuming you are staying in the downtown area, walking is the best way to absorb the sites and sounds of the Island. Funchal is a lively place, restaurants at every "beco" and corner. The architecture is fantastic and the people are happy and friendly. We loved this place so much that my wife and I are talking about retiring there.
