One of the largest cities on the Turkish Black Sea Coast, Trabzon is also one of the country’s most interesting destinations. Known for its long and varied past and many historical landmarks, it also provides access to many destinations in the surrounding regions. These are three of the most interesting attractions in and around Trabzon:
- Hagia Sophia. A former Greek Orthodox church now turned into a mosque, Trabzon’s own Hagia Sophia is one of the most notable buildings in eastern Turkey. Dating back to the 13th century, it is notable for its many stunning frescoes and floor mosaics, as well as other ornate elements. There is also a lovely tea garden next to the building.
- Soumela Monastery. Located about an hour’s drive south of Trabzon, the ‘Black Mountain’ monastery is a fascinating place to visit. Very dramatic looking, it has been hewn straight into the rock and thus seems to be hanging over the cliff’s edge. Built in the 4th century when the area was part of the Roman Empire, it is now surrounded by Altindere National Park.
- Trabzon Museum. Dedicated to all things Trabzon and the surrounding province, this museum is a great place to learn more about the city you’re visiting. Divided into the archaeological and ethnographic sections, it boasts plenty of artifacts from the ancient civilizations that have exhibited the area, as well as from the relatively more recent Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Located almost on the coast, the museum is near other popular attractions like Boztepe Park.
