I find the compact SUV to be more suitable to the roads going to Aqaba where I returned the car. Some roads are rough and have speed bumps that a regular car can have difficulty traversing.

Jordan is a very easy country to drive around, although the traffic in Amman was quite heavy until fairly late in the evening. Other drivers are generally considerate and predictable. The highways to/from Petra, Wadi Rum and Aqaba were all well surfaced and allowed for good progress with very few hold ups.

My friend and I used the hire car to get around Jordan. The hire car gave us the freedom to explore far more of Jordan that we would have otherwise been able to do, including: Mount Nebo, Aqaba, Petra, Wadi Rum, the Baptism site of Jesus, the Dead Sea and a lot more. Other than opting to visit Jordan through a more expensive and less flexible tour group, I can't see a better way of exploring Jordan than to use a hire car like the one we did!

I think renting a car is an essential part of your experience , allowing you to explore Jordan fully. However, be aware that driving around and through Amman is hectic, you need to be prepared for that. Other than that, the roads are in pretty good condition and finally, Jordan is an incredible country!!

Love Jordan, people friendly, beautiful scenery, amazing history and architecture.
Must see; Jerash, Amman citadel and theatre, Dead Sea, Karak Castle, Petra (allow a couple of days), Wadi Rum (again a couple of days), Aqaba {if you want a beach and swim to round off your trip.
Obviously masses of other places (Wadi Hisa is worth a visit if you are into walking)
But for short break the above are the key sights.
