One of the two largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife has long been recognized as a prime tourist destination. Thousands of British visitors travel here every year to enjoy the island’s scenic Atlantic beaches. But more than just busy tourist spots, Tenerife is a place of interesting history and culture along with spectacular natural beauty. These are three of Tenerife’s most interesting attractions:
- San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The historic highland capital of Tenerife, La Laguna, as it is usually called by locals, is a fascinating place to visit. The city’s historic centre has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is characterized by landmarks such as the Cathedral of San Cristóbal, the mannerist building of Casa Salazar, and Adrián Alemán de Armas Library. The city is also home to some of Tenerife’s best museums and restaurants. Located about 65 km (40 miles) from Tenerife South Airport, San Cristóbal can be reached in some 45 minutes by car.
- Los Cristianos. The main resort town of Tenerife is located just a short drive from Tenerife South Airport. In addition to beautiful beaches, the area is also home to the water park of Siam and the Las Aguilas Zoo (also known as the Jungle Park), as well as the place to join a whale or dolphin-watching tour. Other interesting places in the south of the island include the desert town of Guía de Isora, the cliffs of Los Gigantes, and the Basilica of Candelaria.
- Teide National Park. Located in the central part of the island, Teide National Park is named after its highest mountain. Reaching an impressive height of 3,718 m (12,198 feet), the active volcano is the highest summit in all of Spain. The highest part of the mountain can be reached via a cable car; if the weather permits, you might be able to see all the other Canary Islands and even mainland Africa from the top. Although Teide National Park is widely considered to be the most visited national park in Europe, its long network of hiking paths, varying terrain, and abundance of flora and fauna means it is a great place for a relaxing day outdoors.

The roads in Tenerife are good. Easy to find your way around.
We loved Costa Adeje for the reaort, shopping and the best beach on the island, Los Gigantes is also a nice resort. Great harbour and restaurants with a lovely beach.We went dolphin watching and also to La Laguna which is a must. Great museums and restaurants and good shopping in the medieval town.

We live bed staying off the tourist trail in Tenerife on a farm in the mountains overlooking the sea. We experienced rural life. The host was hospitable. We ate in great local fish restaurants. The only drawback: steep, narrow roads with hairpin turns. Clutch on our first car burnt out! Happily the replacement car was up to the job.

Tenerife traffic was worst than expected, very busy on the main roads. Visited Mt. Teide in the car, roads very fine, smooth surface, wide, easy to drive on (even the more bendy route). We were unable to go on the cable car because of the weather but still visited wonderful viewing points. Parking was difficult in some of the popular viewing points.
