One of the largest cities on the Turkish Black Sea Coast, Trabzon is also one of the country’s most interesting destinations. Known for its long and varied past and many historical landmarks, it also provides access to many destinations in the surrounding regions. These are three of the most interesting attractions in and around Trabzon:

• Hagia Sophia. A former Greek Orthodox church now turned into a mosque, Trabzon’s own Hagia Sophia is one of the most notable buildings in eastern Turkey. Dating back to the 13th century, it is notable for its many stunning frescoes and floor mosaics, as well as other ornate elements. There is also a lovely tea garden next to the building.
• Soumela Monastery. Located about an hour’s drive south of Trabzon, the ‘Black Mountain’ monastery is a fascinating place to visit. Very dramatic looking, it has been hewn straight into the rock and thus seems to be hanging over the cliff’s edge. Built in the 4th century when the area was part of the Roman Empire, it is now surrounded by Altindere National Park.
• Trabzon Museum. Dedicated to all things Trabzon and the surrounding province, this museum is a great place to learn more about the city you’re visiting. Divided into the archaeological and ethnographic sections, it boasts plenty of artifacts from the ancient civilizations that have exhibited the area, as well as from the relatively more recent Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Located almost on the coast, the museum is near other popular attractions like Boztepe Park.

Main airlines

The airport primary serves domestic traffic. Turkish Airlines, the countries flag carrier, along with the low-cost Turkish airline Pegasus provide the most flights to and from Trabzon Airport.

Terminals

Trabzon Airport consists of a domestic terminal and an international terminal. You can walk from one to the other.

Location

Trabzon Airport is about 8 km (5 mi) from downtown Trabzon. Motorway D010 connects the airport to the city, and the entire drive features scenic views of the Black Sea.

Rental companies that are located at the airport have desks in the domestic terminal. The other rental companies serving the airport usually provide a meet a greet service where a representative meets you at the airport with the rental car.

Services and facilities

You’ll find several cafés, food stands, and small restaurants, as well as stores and a duty-free shop. There is also an ATM, an on-site hotel, medical centers in both terminals, and a mosque. There is no luggage storage service. Some of the airport’s facilities are equipped for passengers with reduced mobility. There are also companies that provide special assistance, but you should contact your airline in advance if you’d like this service.

Nearest gas station

If returning to the airport from the city center of Trabzon, then you will pass a Shell station right after exiting the D010 for the airport. This station is just as convenient for those returning cars to companies that are not located at the airport.

If you are coming to the airport from the east, you can stop at a Petrol Ofisi on Baris Cd. which is located on the other side of the highway at the same exit as the airport.
