City facts
- Like the rest of Calabria, Lamezia Terme enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers. There is very little or no precipitation from May to August. Winters are mild and slightly more humid. The average high temperature is 29°C (85°F) in August, the warmest month, and 14°C (57°F) in January.
- Although the area’s history dates back to the Ancient Greek and Roman times, the municipality was officially only created in 1968 when settlements Nicastro, Sambiase, and Sant’Eufemia Lamezia were joined together to form Lamezia Terme. Nowadays, the city’s population is just over 70,000. The inhabitants of Lamezia Terme are called lametini.
Top sights and activities
- Norman Castle. First built by the Ancient Greeks, the castle of Lamezia Terme was later significantly remade by Norman and Angevin rulers. Over the centuries, the castle crumbled under invasions and during earthquakes with only ruins surviving to this day. However, there is a haunting beauty about the place, especially since it sits on a hilltop at a height of 320m (1,050ft), and, naturally, the views of the city below are magnificent.
- The Bastion of the Knights of Malta. Built in the mid-16th century by the Spanish king of Naples, the bastion was given as a gift to the Military Order of Malta who at the time was in charge of protecting the coast from Ottoman attacks from the sea. Although life is much safer nowadays, the bastion has lost none of its historic grandeur.
- The Diocesan Museum. Over centuries, Calabria has been (and remains) home to many Catholic monasteries and dioceses. The Diocesan Museum of Lamezia Terme honors this heritage by displaying religious paintings and sculptures, sacred objects, and other relics. Many of the exhibits were in bad shape when the museum opened in the 1990s but have been carefully restored back to resemble their original form. In addition to Christian artifacts, the museum also has an impressive 12th-century Arab-Norman ivory case on display.
Traffic and parking
- The speed limit in cities is 50km/h, although in certain areas the speed limit may be reduced to 30km/h.
- Main highways are limited to 130km/h, non-major highways to 110km/h, and local roads to 90km/h. When it is raining, the limits are respectively lowered to 110km/h, 100km/h, and 80km/h. The general speed limit is lowered to 50km/h during heavy fog or other cases of bad visibility.
- Proof of insurance and the car’s documentation need to be in the car whenever you’re driving.
- When driving you need to have your passport or ID card with you at all times.
- The legal alcohol limit is 0.05% for experienced drivers and 0.00% for novice drivers. Being over the allowed limit can result in hefty fines and even imprisonment.
- The emergency number, like elsewhere in the EU, is 112.
