Avoid Venice , go to Verona instead . Stelvio Pass definitely worth it. For lake Garda choose Riva Del Garda - east side for better views and sun or west for better experience. East coast of Lake Garda is much better than west coast. Also be careful of all the drivers on the road and drive extremely alert all the time.

Once you get used to the italian driving style and junctions which are easy to miss or take the wrong one it was fine. Verona was lovely and parking near the centre was easy to find and not expensive. Lake Garda was nice and the public ferry boats are really good. Milan has a great public transport system. We stayed in Bergamo and drove to Monza to get the train in. Station parking was good and 7 euro for the day. Train takes 20 mins and includes using underground etc. Much cleaner that British cities and toilets in particular. English is well understood and used even on signage. Bergamo is lovely and a great base for touring about from.

Drove from Milan to Genoa, along the coast to Pisa then Florence and on to Bologna and the Ferrari museum at Maranello then to Ravenna on the east coast, saw flamingoes then on to Venice, to Lake Garda and back to Milan.

Road trip around Lake Garda was fantastic as where the little villages and site around the lake.
Venice is within easy driving distance and is a must for everyone but please be aware of driving speed limits and Italian traffic laws, it would be wise to respect them.

no snow chains, car got stuck on the slightest incline 5 miles away from our hotel and we spent 3 hours walking up a hill at 11pm at night to get there The following day was spent retrieving our luggage from the car and paying for a taxi to drive us to and from the car so we missed our first day skiing because of this very upset

If staying in Lake Como, take the short (80km) drive to St Moritz in Switzerland, as its an amazing experience, and really isn't that far.
Border crossing is easy, and the scenery is something else. In fact, words can't really describe it.

Milan is worth the trip, but some research about driving and parking zones are necessary. The drive itself is easy, especially if you are used to metropolitan areas, like london. Not too much traffic. But this is due to the fact that not all cars are allowed to drive into the city, and fees apply.
Lake Como was amazing and beautiful. We have only visited the city of Como, but already planning a road trip around the lake.

Car was upgraded to a large one due to availability and although the replacement car had minor accident damaged this was detailed prior to pick with no issues on return.
I used this company based on there reviews and would use again.
