Olbia is a smaller airport on the Italian island of Sardinia. The airport (and the city's port) is a popular entry point to the island for many Europeans including Brits. Olbia, while a nice city, is not the end destination for most passengers; instead, most head toward the beaches and other parts of the island. It's, therefore, no surprise that almost all arriving passengers end up hiring a car.
Tolls: There are currently no toll roads on Sardinia. However, there are ZTL zones in the centre of the islands largest cities, and it is forbidden to enter these zones unless authorized (like a being a resident of a building in the zone). Make sure to avoid entering these zones to avoid any fines that the hire company will definitely pass on to you.
Taking a hire car to the mainland: Most hire companies at Catania Airport allow their cars to be taken between Sardinia and mainland Italy. Usually, travellers make this a one-way trip (that is, not returning to Sardinia or not returning to the mainland). There is an additional fee for this, though it is not large percentage-wise if hiring a car for a week or more. You can search for the location where you would like to drop off the car and the extra fee will be included in the total prices.
One-way rental between Sicily and Sardinia may not be available by the specific hire company you choose. And if they are, the fee is significantly higher than travelling to the mainland.

Sardinia is a beautiful country and definitely a car is needed to explore it. The roads are in great condition and are not busy. I'd recommend the archaeological site of Balumni, any beach that we visited (Tower the Bari, Villasimus, cala luna...) were amazing, clean water and sand or stones. No much to see in terms of snorkeling

We travelled into the mountains to Groppa gorge, and visited villages, beaches, towns to the north of the island. Olbia was very pretty yo visit.
There was an abundance of fresh fruit and veg meats in the shops, but the meals in the restaurants were expensive and not very palatable.

Sardinia is a beautiful island. We had a lovely time, fab geology and amazing beaches. The Italian driving style is fast and furious, make sure you take out full car cover.. driving there is not for the faint-hearted, over-taking on blind bends is common. Beware of motorcyclists!!

We also went to the famous La Pelosa, which you have to go to if you are in Sardinia. I can honestly say that it is a beautiful beach, but it is not worth the money and reservations. There are many beautiful beaches in the northern part of Sardinia, which I personally found even more beautiful than La Pelosa. We had dinner at the Hotel Marina in Badesi. I have to say that it was excellent, nice atmosphere, excellent food and reasonable prices.

Drivers in Sardinia are rude, inpatient and drive way too fast. Roads at night are very poorly lit making driving conditions quite difficult. Parking is also quite tricky here.

We travelled through Sardinia on quiet roads in early March, and were able to visit stunning archaeological sites and witness amazing carnival rituals (on Shrove Tuesday) that we could not have seen without a car. We were able to go on very beautiful walks in the mountains, sometimes having to give way to sheep, cows and wild horses. Marvellous food wherever we went.

Sardinia is a beautiful Island. There was a boat show on in Porto Rotondo when we went in May, which is a great place for boat and people watching. There were some watersports on offer at the beach in Marinella including paddle boarding, windsurfing and wingfoil. By June you can rent lasers, a hobbie or a range of ribs from Marinella. We also went to the Saturday market in Olbia which is fun to see the local crafts, food and clothes on sale, including local cheeses and honey.
