Airport travel guide

One of the most charming islands of Western Greece, Zakynthos is often mentioned by the Greek people as a benchmark for natural beauty. This being Greece, the Ionian island is also not short for fascinating historical heritage. These are three of its most notable attractions:
- Zakynthos Town. Located on the island’s southeastern coast, just a 15 ride from its international airport, the main settlement of Zakynthos is also an interesting place to explore. While many tourists will prefer to stay in one of the smaller resort settlements along the coastline, the town itself is where a wonderful square, some of Zakynthos’ most notable Venetian architecture, and many of the island’s best restaurants can be found. Many boat trips – both to the mainland and to tourist attractions – also take off from here.
- Blue Caves. Located at the far northern end of Zakynthos, just off the main island, the Blue Caves are arguably the most visited place in Zakynthos. While the caves themselves have been naturally carved into rock formations, their association with colour blue comes from the crystal clear azure water of the Ionian Sea. Guided motorboat tours most often take place from the small coastal town of Alykanas that is on the island’s eastern coast, about halfway between Zakynthos Town and the caves themselves.
- Navagio. Turning to the western coast, more specifically its northern portion, one of the most notable attractions is no doubt Navagio beach that provides two very distinct attractions. First, it is a lovely coastal stretch in its own right, dramatically situated in a cove below some mighty cliffs. But second, it is also the location of MV Panagiotis, a Greek ship that sank in 1980 and has since become a popular attraction for tourists and divers (indeed, the area is sometimes called Shipwreck Beach, and also, due to its historical remoteness, Smuggler’s Beach). The area cannot be accessed by car, and as of 2026, was temporarily closed due to the risk of rockfall. If you want to visit, it is best to inquire at your hotel – they will be able to tell you if it is currently open, and, if so, which is the point from where the tourist boats take off.
