Drove all over the island, climbed Pico Ruivo and Pico do Arieiro and did a few levada and waterfall treks. Sledding and the cable car were fun in Funchal.

We love walking the levadas. Visiting the amazing beauty spots, The food is always good. The bolo do caco, the limpets, espada and meat on the spit. Of course we went to calheta too! Lovely beach!

Madeira is a breathtaking island with stunning scenery, well worth a visit. The road infrastructure is very impressive but there are some very windy, steep roads so you need to be a confident driver and I recommend hiring a powerful car.

The trip was great. 9 nights in Madeira in total but for the first 5 we stayed in Funchal and no vehicle was needed. Rented a car due to the location of where we were moving onto and the rural, mountain area of Sao Vincente. The cars took us through the clouds, up steep hills into the mountains.

Really enjoyed driving across the island, the roads were hilly and tight but the scenery and views were outstanding. We stayed in Santana, Calheta and Funchal and enjoyed all 3!

Madiera is very busy peak season with tourists. It was like a car park wherever we went that was slightly touristy, you can try and be clever but even leaving the hotel one morning at 6 for sunrise we still encountered over 300 cars at the summit. Would recommend the azores more.

Thoroughly recommend Madeira. It's absolutely stunning - however that does inevitably mean that the driving is a little bit on the hairy side at times (especially with LH drive novices!)! Given all those tunnels I dread to think how one would get by without automatic headlights!!

Madeira is a great place to explore nature, particularly the many waterfalls and the vista points. Food is also great almost everywhere. the local restaurants are the best, and it s not needed to book in advance to find a space. Maybe you wait 10 mins, but you will be served.
