The sunrise at Pico Arerio was stunning! But make sure you give yourself plenty of time and be aware that the roads up are very steep so maybe go for a car with a bigger engine.

I loved the Nature and the people of Madeira. Funchal is great for its culture and restaurants. I would however not recommend a car rental for an extended period of time if you are staying in Funchal since driving and parking in the city can be very stressful. Unless your accommodation provides parking space of course.

If your used to driving, Madeira really isn’t as scary as people make it out to be.. if you’re confident driving in the Lake District, Madeira shouldn’t be too much trouble.

If we hadn't have had the car we wouldn't have been able to explore the island like we did!! Would 100% recommend hiring a car. We stayed in Funchal and went to Port Moinz natural pools and Seixal beach.

Explored all parts of the island using hire car. The car was a little underpowered for the steep hills and some of the drivers in Funchal were really bad, but overall a pleasant experience.

We enjoyed great food on the island. Scenically the island, the north coast in particular, is spectacular. Our main reason for visiting Madeira was hiking but an October heatwave caused us to rein in our plans somewhat. It's also important to consider the logistics when making hiking plans. Group tours, mainly from Funchal, may be a better option in some cases as lots of routes on the island are 'open jaw' without a viable circular option.

Great place and definitely worth hiring a car to see the whole island and get the full experience. Good place to drive and good quality roads, evenin the mountains. Really steep hills so worth having a more powerful engine to help with the hills.

We originally booked a smart car (1L engine capacity & 70 horsepower) & were upsold for €50 to a VW Polo (1.2L engine & 100 horsepower) which suited us perfectly for exploring Madeira including hiking spots & beach’s! Would 110% recommend, we had the most amazing time!

Madeira is a crazy island and a complete surprise. Some much to see and do. Highlights include Cabo Girão cliff skywalk, Pico do Arieiro, Levada walks, Fanal Forest, Funchal cable car, Monte Palace Tropical Garden, Funchal Toboggan Ride and our resting place, the Savoy Saccharum resort. Food is fresh, fruit is amazing and wine a bonus. Highly recommended holiday destination.

Madeira is beautiful. Funchal old town is very quaint. We went on an amazing dolphin and whale spotting trip. We used the car to access the Levada walks, which were stunning. Along the north coast we visited Porto Moniz, which is a pleasant town! We'll be sure to return.

We were able to see lots of the island. Traffic was, in the main, very light and the roads very easy to navigate. Some roads are very steep with sharp bends but provided you drive at a sensible speed and use the gearbox it’s fine. The scenery is spectacular!
